[RECAP] Knit for Food 2023

March 28, 2023

On Sunday, March 26th, my friend and I kicked off our first knitting group event by bringing local knitters together for Knit for Food 2023.

Knit for Food is fundraising event developed by designer Laura Nelkin that brings awareness of food insecurity to the masses and supports Meals on Wheels, Feeding America, Team No Kid Hungry, and World Central Kitchen. Handcrafters from around the country pledge to knit for 12 hours, all while encouraging donations to our fundraising pages.

Yes, our hands hurt on Monday.

We spent the day participating in Zoom events that included everything from yoga for knitters to educational segments from each organization. Some well-known knitters, like Knitty Natty, hosted their own virtual events between sessions so we could continue socializing while also giving away small handknits to anyone who donated. In Natalie’s case, she knit two yarn cozies during the event that she’ll eventually raffle away.

It was a great way to finally have a reason to resurrect a knitting group in the Lehigh Valley and enjoy our craft in person after so many years of virtual knit nights - and all for a good cause. This year, we raised over $300k, which means the featured organizations will be able to provide OVER THREE MILLION meals to people who need them - and with dignity, to boot.

To learn more about how to participate in next year’s KFF, I recommend subscribing to updates on Laura Nelkin’s website. The date moves around every year, so it’s important to find out when it’s happening so you can plan ahead.

And if you’re in or around the Lehigh Valley of PA, we’d love to see you at a future event! Make sure to follow The Worsted Witches on Instagram for real-time news and updates about upcoming events.
